It is not just that, I believe. You need to cater for
the widest possible audience and sometimes this means
to develop a 3D and a let's call it 2D (or more
'conventional') version of your interface. That costs
more time and money.

I'm a great defender of open standard, but also fully
aware of their short handness. Take VRML. We agree
that it's a good open standard, but we need relying on
Cosmo (gone), blaxxun (gone) and ParalleGraphics
(still in business, but frankly quite far from the
purposes and objectives and the web3d consurtium - and
I worked with them for quite a while). What if they
disappear? What if the next Windows/Mac OS crashes
when using Cosmo/Contact/Cortona and no one is there
to fix it? What would you do with the open stadard,
then, print it? ;-) It has never been clear to me
where the generous efforts in X3D (YEARS!) are leading
since no browser company is really involved in it.
Meanwhile Flash rules...

Because it lack purpose (not implying, just asking)?
Because it's too complicated not only to navigate but
even to download? Because the majority of users would
not be able to get it on their screens? Probably we
cannot compare a million dollar game and its
professionality with a art piece developed mostly by
individuals that might lack some of the skills that a
100 strong team has...
No matter how hard you try, you will never get in a
museum the same crowd which is attracted to a football
match. Art is NOT for everybody, I think.
Maybe.
